The IP Solution
The solution that addressed the problem is having a
simple, application-independent and lowest denominator network services. These
stateless gateways could easily route around failures with application-specific
knowledge out of gateways. So the Internet becomes much faster to access and a
platform for rapid but competitive innovation.
Network-layer Overlay model
In order to define a new protocol (IP) and map all
applications/networks to IP, it requires only one mapping (IP to new protocol)
when a new protocol/application is added. It also requires a global address
space that can create for universal addressability and scaling. However, before
IP existed there was no network level overlay. Each new application had to be
re-implemented for every single network technology. So then came the idea to
create overlay, which was better than any other translation. There were fewer
and simpler mappings. Network layers also lead to a more efficient
implementation and global addressing.
